The Time is Now!

Despite this week's freaky cold snap, now is the time to plant your spring garden! The average last frost date for Tallahassee is March 21 and that date is rapidly approaching. Use compost to prep your beds and organic fertilizers to add a boost. Find supplies and plants at Native Nurseries and Tallahassee Nurseries in Tallahassee.

The next two weeks are prime time for planting the following:

  • Tomatoes (transplants)

  • Squash (seeds or transplants)

  • Cucumbers (seeds or transplants)

  • Beans

  • Lettuce (seeds or transplants)

  • Arugula (seeds)

  • Basil and other herbs (transplants)

  • Beets (seeds)

  • Melons (seeds)

  • Sweet Corn (seeds)

  • Sunflowers and Zinnias (seeds)

Crops to plant later in spring:

  • Sweet Potatoes (plant "slips" in May)

  • Field Peas (such as pink eyed peas, plant seeds in late spring/early summer)

  • Peppers (transplants in April)

Crops we don't recommend planting now:

  • Winter greens like Kale (the bugs will destroy them)

  • Broccoli (it can be done, but winter broccoli is so much tastier)

  • Onions

  • Garlic (plant in October)

  • Peas (plant in January)

  • Potatoes (you can try, but most folks plant on Valentines Day)
